Bearded Dragon Habitat

Tips for the Best Beardie Habitats

It is not so tough to make habitat for a Bearded dragon. Many times it is so easy if proper process is followed. The host of this reptile should always be careful about it’s perfect habitat. As these animal are cool blooded, their vivarium should be remote from all kind of heat sources. Before habitat them one must learn about them carefully.

Temperature is a great factor for the housing of a Dragon. As they are a kind of lizards they should be kept in their satisfactory temperature. When the captivity temperature is gained they move to the warmer region of the tank. For proper monitoring we should manage a good thermometer on the vivarium as we can easily notice the condition. 78-88 degree F is a good range of temperature.

Maintaining Ecosystem is a must on the vivarium. A mini-ecosystem should be created as a reptile gets a congenial atmosphere of it’s own to reproduce a number of own species. A single and huge tank is normally necessary for your bearded pet. The pet should have plenty of added space to maneuver.

The location where the vivarium is placed is also selective. It must not be in any place where the pet feels comfort. Usually it likes to watch people making fun with it. You can put it where can easily take care of it. It can also be beside your bedroom. One end of the cage should have a basking light and cooling source on the other end. Housing of Babies and small juveniles differs from adults. Babies need 10 to 20 gallon aquarium where adult needs 50 to 60 gallon. It should also keep in mind that too small vivrium can’t sustain the expected temperature gradient.

So, don’t be upset. At first learn clearly and then start to habitat your loving pet carefully.

If you are considering keeping a bearded dragon as a pet, you will have to choose a substrate for its cage.  A bearded dragon substrate is the substance that covers the floor of a bearded dragon cage. Since there are so many different types of substrates in the market, there is hardly a consensus on the “best substrate” in the bearded dragon community. Some people have gone to the extent of vehemently opposing some substrates and insisting that there is only one bearded dragon substrate to use. The following is a list of popular bearded dragon substrates.

  • Sand and Gravel

In the wild, bearded dragons spend all their time scurrying on the sand. That’s why some people consider bearded dragon sand to be the most “natural” substrate. However, most people believe that sand or gravel increases the risk of gut impaction. Some people who have adult bearded dragons even prefer to use special forms of sand such as Non-silica sand or Calci-sand. However, using “special” sand as a substrate for baby bearded dragons is still a bad idea.

  • Reptile Carpets / Cage Liners

A Cage liner is a special synthetic carpet that is made to simulate natural bearded dragon habitats such as grass and desserts. A carpet is really easy to use; all you have to do is spread the carpet across the floor of the bearded dragon enclosures. However, many people worry that the beardie’s claw may get caught in the loops of the carpet causing it to get ripped off.

  • Newspaper

While old newspapers aren’t as aesthetically appealing as sands, they are really easy to maintain. Moreover, the risk of impaction is completely eliminated making it the perfect substrate for baby bearded dragons. If your bearded dragon loves to dig, you can buy washed and shredded newspaper substrate from the pet store. The only major problem with newspaper substrates is that they retain humidity.

Though the above bearded dragon substrates aren’t exactly perfect, there are some substrates that you should avoid at all costs.

  1. Crushed Walnut Shell – It has sharp and jagged edges and it can cause severe impaction if ingested by the pet lizard.

  1. Shredded Bark and Mulch – It holds a bit too much moisture and may cause humidity in the enclosure to rise above the desired level.

  1. Corn Cob – It is hard and highly indigestible.

There are several basic plans for raising a healthy bearded dragon. Providing the proper environment is crucial for its survival. Creating an environment that resembles the dragon’s habitat is the first plan to consider for good maintenance. Taking the time to build the proper environment will provide the care needed to keep your pet secure and healthy. Enclosures made of glass with a screen top are common, or building your own enclosure can be less costly. The most appropriate size should be 24×48 inches. It is important to provide plenty of floor space for your dragon to roam. A 40 gallon size tank will provide more floor space than a 55 gallon tank. A 55 gallon tank provides the volume needed only for liquid. Producers of aquariums make special ones for housing reptiles now that are shorter and deeper in dimensions. There should be plenty of room for your dragon to grow to adult size.
The dragon’s native environment would include rocks and soil. This could be accomplished with red sandstone on the floor. A finer sand is not recommended since it has been known to cause infections on the feet, eyes and can cause impaction if digested. Stacking several secured rocks would provide a cozy hiding spot and supplying a branch of wood provides security while surveying its surroundings. Occasionally, bearded dragons may want to soak or drink water. The water will hydrate to cool them down after basking. The ideal basking area should be at the other side of the aquarium. The placement of the water container requires a cooler spot in the living area if the dragon becomes too warm while basking.
Since reptiles are cold-blooded creatures, an ultraviolet light is needed for warmth. A temperature of 110 degrees is ideal. A proper diet for baby dragons is protein. As an adult add greens, fruits, and vegetables. Add calcium with vitamins to food for healthy bones. This is recommended for good health.

Bearded Dragons require bright white light throughout the daytime for heading. A red light can be used throughout the night since it provides enough light for observation with disturbing your pet and it will provide ample heat during the night hours. A beard dragon habitat can also utilize an under tank heater. These heaters are one option for keeping the tank snug at night with the heating lamp off, while ceramic heat emitters are another.
